Hariharpur Sangeet Gharana – A 400+ Years Old Living Musical Legacy

Hariharpur Sangeet Gharana is a village located 5 km from Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh, towards the north of Tamsa river, which is adorned with the sound of Classical music throughout the day. This village has around 40 Brahmin families, whose occupation is music and are supporting their families through singing, playing instruments like- Tabla, Sitar, Dholak, Keyboard, Sarangi, etc.

It has a very ancient and rich musical tradition, believed to be about 400 to 600 years old. This gharana is world famous for its classical vocal music, especially thumri, and folk singing (such as kajri, chaita, and phagua). It is believed that their ancestors had received 989 acres of land as a gift for their talent and thus this village was settled in that land. An ancient well is still there in the village. This is such a village of the country that even a toddler who cannot speak properly, but with music in his genetics he can hum to the songs in Sur and Taal. All the young children and adults practice together regurlarly and their first Guru is mostly their mother, father or uncle.

The ancestors of this Gharana who had propagated the music of Hariharpur Sangeet Gharana in the field of Classical vocal were- Pt. Ramdas Mishra, Pt. Navratan Mishra, Girja Mishra, Pt. Rakhal Mishra, Vasudev Mishra, Pt. Pannalal Mishra, Pt. Ganesh Prasad Mishra; Sarangi- Luru Mishra, Sawla Mishra, Devi Prasad Mishra, Kishore Mishra, Rajkeshwar Mishra, Bhairav Mishra, Rameram Mishra, Shyam Bihari Mishra, Makhan Mishra, Yadunath Mishra, Pt. Tarekshwar Mishra, Pt. Mahesh Prasad Mishra, Ram Pratap Mishra, etc. Tabla- Pt. Guru Sahai Mishra, Pt. Bulbul Maharaj, Manilal Mishra, Amarnath Mishra, Lakshmi Narayan Mishra, Ram Pratap Mishra; and Kathak Dance- Shyam Lal Mishra aka Jakhu Mishra.

In the 21st Century, the credit of promoting Hariharpur Sangeet Gharana to the world is held by Padma Vibhushan Pt. Chhannulal Mishra, Pt. Bholanath Mishra, National Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee (New Delhi)- Pt. Ambika Prasad Mishra (Tabla), Pt. Dinanth Mishra (Classical Vocal), Pt. Kalinath Mishra (Tabla), etc. Moreover, some artists are propagating and popularising the Gharana at Institutional level like- Dr. Manoj Kumar Mishra (HOD Taal Vadya, Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya, Lucknow), Dr. Anjani Mishra, Dr. Garun Mishra, Arpit Mishra (Classical Vocal), Anand Mishra (Tabla), Amrit Mishra (Kathak).

In the modern era, global recognition of the Gharana has been led by Padma Vibhushan Pt. Chhannulal Mishra along with several award-winning artists and institutional scholars who continue to promote this musical heritage at national and international levels.

Many young artists are working in the field of Classical Music and Instruments like- Pt. Adarsh Mishra, Abhishek Kumar, Chandan Mishra, Tripurari Mishra, Ramesh Mishra, Suresh Mishra, Dwarika Mishra, Praveen Kumar Mishra, Abhinandan Mishra, Ashish Mishra (Sarangi), Alok Kumar Mishra (Tabla), Rishikesh Mishra, Sibu Mishra, etc.

In the present time, the leading exponent of Hariharpur Sangeet Gharana is Pt. Adarsh Mishra (Classical, Semi-Classical & Folk singer), who is the torchbearer of this Gharana. He is the National Gold Medalist in Vocal, he has received the first place in Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Competition (Yuva Varg). Also, he has performed in almost all the major cultural centres at many prestigious stages and platforms like- Lucknow Mohatsav, Gorakhpur Mohatsav, Azamgarh Mohatsav, Kajri Mohatsav, ITRHD (Delhi), and many more.

The Hariharpur Sangeet Mahavidyalaya has been built with the able guidance and support of the Honourable Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath and Ex- MP, Dinesh Lal Yadav aka Nirahua with the cost of approximately 26 Crore, which was inaugurated by the Honourable Home Minister of India, Shri Amit Shah, which will be affiliated to Bhatkhande University of Culture, Lucknow.
